Remember we were talking about the difference between movement and exercise? And how we often confuse the two?
People so often ask us if doing yoga is enough exercise, and really, it's the wrong question. A better one might be: how can I add more movement to my daily life without having to schedule a special time to EXERCISE?
We do this as yoga teachers a bit because we get so much incidental exercise - our classes are all over the city and we often walk there or walk to the public transport. Then, when we get to our corporate client's offices, we pack up the chairs and tables in the meeting room and often unpack them again at the end of class. It's great! Tiring sometimes, but every chair we lift is a squat we don't have to do at the gym.
Here are some other ways I sneak more movement into my day (and a peek into my working life)
8:00 - 8:30: wake up, check messages and emails in bed
8:30 - 8:45: roll around in bed to stretch a little before getting up - recognise these? Yep. yoga in BED!!!
8:45 - 9:00: make coffee while practising how to balance on one leg
9:00 - 9:05 Brush my teeth while trying not to lean my pelvis against the counter and stretch my hamstrings
9:05 - 9:30 Shower and get ready for the day. I usually hang upside down for a bit after coming out of the shower because all the back muscles have loosened up from the hot shower and it feels great to do it now. Substitute photo below because I cannot take one while naked.
So, basically, I just did a bunch of yoga before I even left the house. And it didn't take me any longer than NOT doing yoga! Win!
